A new collection: Anatomy

The anatomy books of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries hired real artists, and it shows. Jacques-Fabien Gautier d'Agoty's Anatomical Angel (1746) is a colour mezzotint of a woman's back, dissected and posed like a portrait. Bernhard Siegfried Albinus set his skeletons in front of Clara, a rhinoceros who toured Europe in the 1740s and 1750s.

Five plates come from Govard Bidloo's Anatomia humani corporis (1685), drawn by Gerard de Lairesse with the drapery and still-life calm of Dutch painting. Also new in The Night Sky: Trouvelot's Mars, and Mare Humorum on the Moon.
